The Greater Kilimanjaro/Amboseli ecosystem is one of the richest on earth in terms of biodiversity: it spans 15,500 km², includes 16 protected areas, and is home to more than one million mammals of 28 different species.

This spectacular wildlife cannot survive confined in protected area borders and has for centuries coexisted with more than 100,000 pastoralists and their livestock. The survival of these people, wildlife, and livestock are fully dependent on the health of the rangelands, which has reduced by 30% in recent years. Protecting this ecosystem is essential to ensure the well-being of all who live in it. We are striving to tackle this challenge in the next 3 years (2017-2020). 

Greater Kilimanjaro initiatives to enhance community participation in sustainable conservation of the transfrontier ecosystem and wildlife. The first of its kind, a cross-border collaborative effort to protect the Greater Kilimanjaro-Amboseli ecosystem, wildlife, and people.

Biodiverse-rich Kenya and Tanzania, are working to secure wildlife protection and connectivity in the Kilimanjaro -Amboseli ecosystem. This project will promote positive dialogue between communities, local institutions, conservation organizations, and the government.  Hence, it is essential for conserving this critical landscape and for its communities to thrive.
